Human Nature.
No one is naturally humble. No one naturally loves suffering or what is contrary to nature. It is the supernatural virtue of faith, hope and love burning in our hearts which gives us strength of will and courage to desire the cross.
~ Meditations. (MD 242)

Discretion is hardly a natural virtue.
Let us have recourse to the Blessed Virgin to learn to overcome ourselves, not to speak inopportunely, not to divulge imprudently what our special vocation obliges us to respect.
Let us confide the custody of our tongue to her. Of how many sins is it not the instrument. To how many perils has our tongue not exposed us and how many interior and exterior difficulties has it not caused us? Moreover, after putting so many obstacles in the way of our own perfection, it does the same wrong to that of our neighbour. Let us examine carefully the use we have made of our tongue. Let us ask God’s pardon for the faults it has caused. Let us watch carefully over our words, learn to keep silence and observe in all things a wise discretion.
~ Meditations. (MD 333)

Nowadays people think they can arrange everything satisfactorily on this earth by the use of human methods, sometimes illicit. They act as though God were not almighty, as if blessings and true success come to those who are indifferent to the Divine will or even scorn it.
Let us be careful not to let this contagion enter into our souls. It comes from a lack of faith. In all things let us seek what is due to God, confiding all the rest to His Providence.
~ Meditations. (MD 361)

Nowadays faith has weakened, nature wants to be sovereign master, and often all the claims of flesh and blood take precedence over what is due to God.
Let us be on our guard against this error.
~ Meditations. (MD 378)

Those who make use of purely human means and who lightly transgress the Rule in order to obtain success, may have rapid and apparent results; Satan delights in leading them into illusion. True and lasting fruits however, are reserved for those who are faithful and regular; the demon cannot give permanent success.
~ Meditations. (MD 457)

Let us always prefer the good pleasure of God to everything else. In vain will the demon attack us but great will be their error. The Lord will be with us, and all their attacks will only to the glory of our eternal crown.
~ Meditations. (MD 536)

Why should we be astonished when we meet with trials in the path of perfection? Does not the example of the saints like that of our Divine Master, teach us” that all those who wish to be holy, must suffer persecution for justice’ sake?”

In the time of trouble, let us redouble our prayer, our austerities, and our fidelity.
~ Meditations. (MD 556)
